If I was awarded a judgement in North Carolina for personal injury. Can the opposing side appeal
that judgement and how long could this take?

Yes, the other side can appeal. Appeals can be drawn out for quite some time. The amount of time it is likely to take depends very much on the amount of the judgment, the attorneys on the other side, and the legitimacy of the arguments they make on appeal.
