Nebraska Hit and Run Car Accident
Justin Demerath

Q.

What happens if I'm injured in a hit and run car accident; does my insurance pay for my bills?

-- Anonymous

A.

Nebraska law requires the driver of any vehicle involved in an accident to (1) immediately stop such vehicle at the scene of such accident, (2) give his or her name, address, and registration number of the vehicle and exhibit his or her operator's license, and (3) render reasonable medical assistance.

Persons violating the above mandate face stiff penalties if they are captured. Unfortunately, far too many hit and run drivers are never found. As such, it is wise to carry uninsured motorist "UIM" coverage on your own policy, which will likely protect you in a hit and run accident in which the fleeing driver is never found. If you do not carry UIM, you will have no recourse if you cannot find the at fault driver.
