Hello, and thank you for your question. Zicam is the brand name of a drug that contains a form of zinc. There are many different methods of Zicam delivery, the two primary methods being oral and nasal. The orally delivered Zicam comes in the form of lozenges or sprays, while the nasally delivered Zicam comes in the form of nasal gels and nasal swabs. Zicam is advertised as a drug that shortens the duration and lessens the severity of the common cold.
On June 16, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning letter regarding Zicam. The warning letter advised consumers to stop using the nasally delivered Zicam products due to reports of consumers losing their sense of smell, a condition known as anosmia. The letter is not a recall per se, however. In addition, the FDA ordered that Zicam should not be marketed without first being approved by the FDA. The future of Zicam is uncertain, and many doctors, law firms, and retailers are investigating the situation. If you think you may be suffering adverse affects from taking any drug, you should immediately consult your physician.
