Road rage is second only to drunk driving in terms of danger to fellow motorists
on the highways of California. For many, the acts of driving too fast, following too closely,
and swerving too widely can be a harrowing thing to watch, and even scarier to be involved in.
By and large, road rage incidents end with at least one party driving off, ending the
incident. Tragically, however, this was not the case over the weekend with a driver in
Sacramento on Interstate 5.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle and
Sacramento Bee, a driver was driving on I-5 with his wife and four year old son in a blue 1999 Honda
Accord. Witnesses said that he was seemingly involved in a “fight” of sorts with
another motorist who was driving a black Chevy pickup truck. Apparently they were speeding up,
slowing down, and cutting in front of each other in an effort to retaliate for some unknown offense
earlier. Eventually, the driver of the Accord attempted to exit the freeway via an exit.
In order to do so he needed to cross two lanes of traffic. Due to the high speed of the
incident, the driver of the Accord lost control of the car, which zoomed into a ditch and flipped
over until it came to rest on its wheels.
The man and his wife, who was sitting in the
passenger seat, suffered from cuts and abrasions to their heads and arms. Sadly, their young
son was apparently not restrained in the car seat, and was ejected from the car when it flipped
over. He suffered injuries that proved to be fatal at the scene. The driver of the
pickup truck apparently continued on the freeway, and did not pull over or otherwise stop at the
scene.
Road rage can be a seemingly overwhelming feeling, but giving in to the anger can
lead to tragedies such as this one. Due to the carelessness and negligence of a pair of
drivers a very young child died needlessly. Please consider other people on the road, even if
someone else is antagonizing you. It may mean the difference between life and death for
everyone on the road.
