Baltimore auto accidents happen to everyone - even the rich and famous. Though we mostly hear about the latest escapades of Hollywood celebrities, Maryland isn't immune to its share of celebrity incidents.
If you've been in an auto accident, you probably know the process, and went through it without any fanfare. However, if you are famous and had an auto accident, don't be surprised to see your photo or details of your fender bender in newspapers, websites, or television. You don't even have to be in an accident to get publicity. Take Cynthia Busch, wife of Maryland House Speaker. Arrested and charged with a DUI violation in Annapolis, MD, she had failed to stop at an intersection according to a state trooper. This was covered by Channel 8 TV News in MD two days after the incident.
Mike Tyson
After a fender bender, Mike Tyson allegedly attacked two motorists in Gaithersburg, MD. Although Tyson has denied the claim, he was ultimately sentenced to serve one year in a Montgomery County prison. During his stint he also gained more publicity when it was reported that he was refused psychiatric medication, and was ordered to be in solitary confinement for three weeks.
Kumar Barve
In an ironic twist of events, Kumar Barve, the house majority leader for several years, was charged with DUI, and failure to obey a traffic device. Gaithersburg police had arrested Barve when he exited a parking lot where the gate was marked as an entrance. The twist is that Barve supported tougher DUI laws and actually helped to write them.
Tragic Loss of Life
Although car accidents happen every day, you don't normally hear about them unless they are publicized or directly affect your circle of friends and family.
Earlier this year, Los Angeles Angels' rookie pitcher, Nick Adenhart, 22, was tragically killed in a car accident by a suspected drunk driver. Millions have mourned the death of this Maryland native which was publicized on the news. Whether you are a famous celebrity or a hardworking Maryland citizen, make sure you follow the law and don't drive under the influence.
