Getting better is of primary concern, but the temporary disability benefits check from workers comp doesn’t always cover everything. And if you have to bring in extra money, how are you going to do it if you have a physical issue?

The best employers work with their injured employees to ensure they have everything they need. Remember, this employee is coming back at some point. You don’t want them to be bitter about how they were treated. Alleviate these hardships when you can.

What if the accident causes you to be hospitalized? Who will take care of the kids if you are a single parent family? Saving funds for a rainy day is a good idea, right? So is planning for these types of events. But how many of us are really able to do that? Employers aren’t always aware of the hardships their people face. Once you are off work, they sometimes forget about you.

If you do have children, having a good support network is vital. Your spouse, your extended family – they can all help when you are injured. Talk to close friends too. Sometimes, we all need to help each other. Other families with children at the same age are a great place to get help. If you offer to do the same to help them, then everyone wins.

The bottom line is this: Being out of work will probably generate expenses you didn’t think about. Your workers comp settlement will cover a lot, but probably not everything. Plan ahead if at all possible.
