First, the personal injury attorney needs to know the client’s name, contact information, and name of your insurance company, the other insurance companies involved, any pictures of any property damage, area where the incident occurred, amongst other things. Some attorneys provide forms or questionnaires to facilitate this ‘getting to know you’ process; the client should fill them out diligently and completely. The client should also bring all documents related to the case to the attorney’s attention.
Early in an initial client meeting, the attorney needs to determine if any conflicts in interest exist with regard to the personal injury case at hand. If the attorney, or the attorney’s firm, represents a party involved in the case other than the potential client, the attorney will usually be forced to decline the case. The client must be able to provide the names of all individuals or corporations involved, even if they are only potential witnesses.
