What to Bring When Meeting a Personal Injury Attorney

This FREE CONSULTATION enables us to become familiar with the case, all parties involved and set out a framework for working on your car accident, slip and fall, motorcycle accident, or other personal injury case.

First, the personal injury attorney needs to know the client’s name, contact information, and name of your insurance company, the other insurance companies involved, any pictures of any property damage, area where the incident occurred, amongst other things. Some attorneys provide forms or questionnaires to facilitate this ‘getting to know you’ process; the client should fill them out diligently and completely. The client should also bring all documents related to the case to the attorney’s attention.

Early in an initial client meeting, the attorney needs to determine if any conflicts in interest exist with regard to the personal injury case at hand. If the attorney, or the attorney’s firm, represents a party involved in the case other than the potential client, the attorney will usually be forced to decline the case. The client must be able to provide the names of all individuals or corporations involved, even if they are only potential witnesses.

Documentation regarding the accident or injury is essential to a personal injury attorney. A client should always bring all such documentation to the initial meeting with an attorney, even if it is not directly requested. Such documentation might include:

Relevant police or accident reports
Medical, hospital, doctor, and/or therapy records, doctors’ reports regarding the client’s diagnosis and prognosis
Medical bills, including any information regarding insurance coverage
Estimated future medical costs, including estimates regarding missed employment as a result of the injury
A list of the ways in which the injury has impacted the client’s lifestyle
The dates of all events related to the case; dates of the injury itself, of medical procedures and treatments, and so on.
All interactions and correspondence with insurance companies, including claims.
