Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline developed and manufactures Avandia (Rosiglitazone maleate), a Type II diabetes drug that increases the risk of heart attack by 43% and death by cardiovascular event by 64%, according to a report in The New England Journal of Medicine (Spring 2007). This report is based on a study of 42 clinical trials involving Avandia/Rosiglitazone. As with previous harmful drugs, Avandia side effects lawsuit actions can persuade manufacturers to fully disclose risks of medications or halt their production and marketing altogether.
Why consider an Avandia/Rosiglitazone side effects lawsuit? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a formal safety alert shortly after the report was published. GlaxoSmithKline knew about the dangers of Avandia as early as 1999, yet continues to sell the drug today. The FDA is also criticized for not responding to Avandia safety concerns earlier.
