Motor Vehicle Accidents
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation’s 2008 Crash Analysis, Statistics and Information Notebook (CASI), every Georgian will be involved in a motor vehicle crash every ten years. With an estimated population of around nine million, the statistics behind that prediction paint a dangerous and frightening picture of Georgia’s traffic safety.
Since 2000, more than six million people have been involved in a motor vehicle crash in GA, a figure that encompasses drivers, passengers, and pedestrians – almost 2.400 people a day on average. Four million drivers have been involved in crashes resulting in almost a million injuries – 1,720 drivers each day. Each year, on average, nearly 900,000 people are involved in a crash. More than 130,000 people have suffered injuries in a car crash each year for the past seven years.
From 2000 to 2006, over 16,000 drivers were in a crash where someone died; on average, 368 people have injured in crashes each day.
In that same time period, nearly 11,500 people have died in motor vehicle crashes in Georgia, averaging out to 32 people killed in car crashes each week over last seven years.
76.9% of total crashes involved a collision with another vehicle, but only 46.3% of fatal crashes involved a collision with another vehicle.
