Can I Really Avoid a Truck Accident?

Many accidents involving trucks are actually preventable. Trucks drivers are specifically trained to avoid accidents and most of theses drivers are good drivers. However, truck accidents are often caused by passenger car drivers. Trucks have limited maneuverability and visibility because of their size and weight. This fact, alone, tells us that the best course of action when sharing the road with a truck is to drive defensively.

There are several actions we can take to avoid a truck accident and minimize any injuries:

Fasten all seat belts.
Do not drive in the No Zone; these blind spots are behind and beside a truck where the driver has limited visibility.
Never cut in front of a truck; they have slower braking capacity. Look in your rearview mirror, waiting until you see the entire front of the truck before you change lanes.
Be attentive; do not use cell phones while driving and give the road your complete attention.
Be aware that trucks need to make wide turns so give them plenty of room to complete their turns.
Always leave ample space between the truck and your vehicle, being aware of a truck’s speed and momentum.
Avoid aggressive driving such as speeding and frequent lane changing.
When merging into traffic from the roadside in front of a truck, use sufficient acceleration.
Never drink and drive.
Use back roads, avoiding highways, during bad weather and rush hours.

Reviewing these tips will help you learn to share the road responsibly and safely with large trucks, thus reducing the likelihood of being involved in a catastrophic accident. By driving defensively, you can increase the probability that you and your family are safe on our nation’s highways.
