What to do after you are Arrested

You would be hard pressed to find someone that has not been involved in an auto accident at one point or another.  In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there is an accident involving a motor vehicle every ten seconds in the United States.  

Though they affect thousands of people, most of us do not know what to do following an auto accident.  By following a few simple steps you will ensure your safety and take the proper precautions to protect your potential auto accident settlement.

• Check on Everyone Involved

Make sure that everyone involved in the accident is coherent and free of any major or obvious injuries. 

• Call Authorities

Even if no one is injured it is best to call local authorities.  If anyone is injured make sure you inform the emergency dispatcher immediately.  This will effect how they alert authorities and the time it will take for help to arrive.  When the police arrive they will take your statement as well as the statements of everyone involved.

• Exchange Information

Exchange contact and insurance information with everyone involved in the accident.  It is just as important that you get the information of other victims as it is for you to get the information of the person you believe to be at fault.  Also get the contact information of any witnesses.

• Document the Accident

You will likely forget key details pretty shortly after the accident.  Make sure you write down any and all details.  Also take pictures of the scene.  Make sure you take photos from multiple angles and vantage points.

• See a Medial Professional

Even if you do not believe you have suffered any injuries it is important that you see a doctor.  It will be much easier to prove that an injury resulted from the accident if a medical professional discovers it immediately.  Your doctor will provide you with a complete medial report.

• Contact an Attorney

One you have complete police and medical reports it is time to consult an attorney.  Together you and your attorney will review your case and determine what it is worth.  Make sure that you do not make any statements to the insurance company until you have met with your attorney.
