Oakland's gas pipelines are not on PG&E's list of its Top 100 segments needing monitoring or potential action and the lines are inspected every three months, a spokesman said. He could not say if Oakland is safe from the danger of a blast like the San Bruno explosion Sept. 9 because the investigation is ongoing and the cause is unknown.

The status of Oakland's transmission lines, which mostly run along the west side of Interstate 880, is monitored on a 24-hour basis, said Joe Molica of PG&E. Inspections are performed every three months, Molica said, and the most recent inspection was done in April.

Such questions loom large for Bay Area residents in the wake of the explosion that killed eight people and destroyed an entire Peninsula neighborhood.
